| Tricks I have learned on my own while maintaining my forums and helping my fiance maintain his when our resident tech disappeared from the net and our forums were getting riddled with spam (and his forums even got hacked!):
- Never put your email address in forums. By doing so you only bypass the security of forums that are in place to keep you safe! Forums have your email hidden and only in your profile. Don't go posting it on forums openly in posts! If you really want to give someone your email address THAT badly, do it in Private Message!
Also in regards to your email address publically, if you have a website please read this: http://www.projecthoneypot.org/how_to_avoid_spambots.php
- This is why the Organ Donation section of our forums at kidneykorner.com/smfbb/ are hidden from guests. To prevent spamming which topics like that seem to attract.
- Alert the administrator of the forums or moderator if you see any suspicious posts, and never NEVER click on any links in a suspicious post! Even if you are curious, you might inadvertently cause your computer to be what is known as a "Zombie computer" which then spreads viruses via trojans to other computers including your own email contacts! Keep yourself and your friends SAFE!
